A Missions Experience
Dear Hope Church Family,
Although I’ve been a believer for over fifty years, I had never joined a mission trip until now. Honestly, I had low expectations going in—but the Lord always knows what He’s doing. I’m grateful that Ethan encouraged me to join this team with five brothers and sisters in Christ: Niko (Chen), Denise (Coulter), Emi (Holman), Annaleigh (Smith) and Ethan. Except for Ethan, they were all just acquaintances. Not anymore.
On the first morning, Grace, our Quito Quest leader, told us we weren’t on a “mission trip,” but a “missions experience.” She was right—we weren’t only there to minister, but to be ministered to by those we came to serve. In fact, it was soon obvious that part of Quito Quest’s agenda was to disciple and bless us “gringos” that came to visit.
I thought we’d simply teach VBS and do a little manual labor. Turns out Quito Quest supports multiple ministries across Ecuador’s Highlands, each committed to meeting physical and spiritual needs while committed to sharing the Gospel.
Our first stop was Casa Gabriel, a home for young men learning life and work skills while being discipled. They served us with meals and fellowship; we painted a mural on the outside of their home according to their design.
Next was a local church serving children in a poor neighborhood. For three mornings, we led VBS—sharing Bible stories, songs, crafts, and games.
We then visited La Roca, a skateboarding ministry led by men like David and Walter (one of South America’s top skateboarders). We helped build ramps and held our final VBS day at their facility, where the older boys of La Roca mentored the younger children with incredible patience and love.
Sunday worship with La Roca at a city park was a highlight. We sang, Ethan preached, and David (from La Roca) shared his testimony. Afterward, we paired off—one from Hope, one from La Roca – walking and quietly reflecting. I spent time with Walter. Though we couldn’t speak each other’s language, we shared brotherly embraces and a deep bond in Christ I’ll never forget.
What did I learn?
- Blessing flows both ways. Our Ecuadorian brothers and sisters blessed and ministered to me far more than any blessing I had to offer them.
- Weakness doesn’t disqualify you. Though I arrived overweight and out of shape, my team showed me constant grace and patience (without complaining!).
- God forges unexpected friendships. I thought I had little in common with the rest of the team. Yet, I came back sensing a unique bond in Christ to each one that will last far beyond this trip. And, of course, I’ll always have a soft spot for Walter!
I would encourage you to join an upcoming trip and see what the Lord will do in your life. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me.
