Loving the Poor

Ethan Smith   -

Dear Hope Family and Friends,

While Kids’ Camp was off and running in the evenings last week, many Hope folks joined our first ever Hope for the City Mission Week in the mornings. The goal was to provide ways to see and serve our city together—opening our eyes, ears, hands, and hearts to the work of God amongst our neighbors.

On Monday, we partnered with Sunnyside Ministry by helping them sort through clothing and shoe donations and hearing about their vision to serve the poor.

On Tuesday, a friend of Hope, Phillip Summers, took us on a bus tour and prayer walk through Happy Hill and Waughtown, introducing us to historical sites and locations where our city has historically been divided by race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status.

On Wednesday, we spent time at the World Relief offices, where we got a tour of their facilities and learned about their ministry to refugees.

And finally, on Thursday, we spent the morning learning about and serving the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission.

I was so pleased with the participation and enthusiasm from Hope—from young children all the way to retired adults. I look forward to continuing to connect our people to the poor and oppressed amongst us so that we not only give to the poor and serve the poor, but also learn to love the poor.

Speaking of giving, would you consider donating to Sunnyside? Sunnyside is always in desperate need of good quality, lightly used men’s clothing, including t-shirts, shorts, slacks, button-downs, and jackets. If you have any clothing (or shoes!) to give, please bring them to the church. You can find the donation racks and boxes next to the office.

See you on Sunday!
