10 Years of Buddies

Dear Hope Church Family,

This past June marked Hope Springs buddy ministry’s 10th anniversary. I am sure many of you are wondering, What is this ministry? You’ve hopefully seen a few of us wearing the black T-shirt with blue lettering and stick figures on it. This ministry is dedicated to families with individuals who have needs for specialized care.

Our former pastor, Clyde Godwin, initiated it with the Lenham family—especially their daughter, who has a seizure disorder—in mind. Jeanne Lenham heeded the call and worked diligently to make it happen. Our church embraced this new ministry—literally and figuratively. Over the years, there was an abundance of volunteers serving between two and three children at a time. We were able to provide respite for our families during every Sunday service. What a blessing—for those served and for those who served.

Then COVID hit us all hard. The ministry has thankfully been revived, though it is nowhere near what it was before 2020. We are now a small but loyal group of three volunteers and one paid caregiver—Tanni, our Muslim friend and wonderful caregiver. Currently we serve families on two Sundays a month. We would love to grow the ministry by encouraging families in our city who have specialized needs to find acceptance and respite at Hope Church.

I know this ministry is not for everyone. It can seem daunting—and maybe even a little scary—to think about caring for someone with developmental or medical disabilities. When I first volunteered, I had no experience or training. All I knew was that I loved kids, no matter their abilities. I have not regretted it for one minute. The joy I experience as a buddy is rich and pure.

For me, being part of this ministry has been a wonderful example of how I think I am going to help people who have “less than me,” only to realize they have riches beyond anything I’ve ever known, and I am given far more than I could ever give in return.

If you’re curious—even just a little—I’d be happy to tell you more about this ministry.
